WOUND CARE GUIDE FOR TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENTS 

 

TRANSPARENT MESH (PRINEO) AND GLUE CLOSURE

Caring for your wound is extremely important to prevent infections and complete the healing process.  

 

This guide will provide tips on preventing infection and removing the dressing after 21 days. 

​

​

• DAILY WOUND CHECKS​

  • Your incision is closed with glue and covered with a clear mesh dressing that makes it easy to see. 

  • Once the outer occlusive dressing is removed from your wound, you should check the wound daily and call the office if you see any of these changes:  

    • Redness 

    • Drainage 

    • Swelling 

    • Warmth 

    • Open areas 

  • If the mesh becomes loose at the edges, you may carefully trim that area, but if it loosens near the incision, call your surgeon’s assistant for instructions.   

  • Always WASH YOUR HANDS before touching your dressing. DO NOT scratch or pick at the dressing.

• SHOWERING​​

  • You may shower after you are discharged from the hospital, allowing water to rinse over the clear dressing but do not scrub the area. You can wash around the area with soap. 

  • Pat gently with a towel to dry.  ​

  • You can cover the wound with a dry gauze and tape (hips) or ACE wrap (knees)

​

• PRINEO MESH REMOVAL​

  • After 21 days, the clear mesh dressing may be removed by the patient or in the clinic. 

  • Rub a petroleum-based ointment such Vaseline along the length of dressing. 

  • Then, loosen one of the edges of the dressing and gently peel it back from the incision.​
